Ceramics, Porcelain & Terracotta

Let’s start with this simple, basic fact: porcelain and ceramic are not different kinds of tile. They are both ceramic tile. Ceramic is a word derived from the ancient Greek “keramos” meaning roughly “of fired clay”. Porcelain is just one of many varieties of fired clay or ceramic tile. Ceramic tile, including porcelain, is made out of clay, some additives (such as feldspar, petuntse, and quartz sand), and water.

Terracotta is a ceramic material that has been used for building construction and decorative arts since ancient times in cultures around the world. The name literally means "baked earth," is it made from natural clay, which gives it a characteristic reddish-brown color. The color varies slightly depending on the clay used. Terracotta may be glazed for extra durability or to provide color. It is a waterproof and very sturdy material.

Manufacturers from all around the world each have their own recipes for making Ceramic tiles in different shapes, colors, finishes and quality levels. EMCO has partnered with several of these manufacturers in order to offer its clients the chance to select from a wide variety of these tiles to suit their design and visions as best possible.
